Our Approach

Our Approach to Tackling Poverty

Focus

We are committed to ending extreme poverty in urban areas by equipping local churches with the tools and knowledge to LIFT their communities out of poverty.

Approach

We believe in reducing vulnerability by increasing the resilience of urban poor communities to identify and prioritize their needs, and with little or no external support, pursue their own solutions to these needs. We see the potential of the urban poor as opposed to their perceived poverty. We journey together through an empowering process anchored in the local church to help them unlock their potential and make use of the skills and resources they already have.

We are Different

  • Grassroots based and locally led – We work with vulnerable households in urban slums areas. Our staff live with communities at grassroots level, learning from them and working alongside them while pursuing the goal of promoting their wellbeing.
  • Partnering with the local Church for Change – We work with and through the local Church to provide local presence, accountability, credibility and infrastructure. Urban Impact partners with local Churches to be agents of transformation in their communities.
  • We promote sustainable solutions to poverty – To break the cycle of poverty and dependency, urban impact operates on the principle of helping communities to help themselves. We believe everyone has a potential to lift themselves out of poverty to self-reliance.
  • Promoting self-reliance and reducing dependency on handouts – By providing use of locally available resources which leads to mind-set transformation.
  • We focus on community – We focus on a community’s strengths rather than its problems, and mobilize their talents, skills and assets to create sustainable solutions.
  • We build on existing structures – We build on existing structures and engage with the local communities and stakeholders to reduce duplication, allows for cost savings and ensures continued structural and community support for beneficiaries after the Urban Impact Kenya withdraws.

Our Motivation

An old saying goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” This proverb is often used to illustrate the importance of teaching someone how to do something instead of simply doing it for them. Ultimately, the proverb is about empowering someone to be self-sufficient. When you teach someone how to do something, you are giving them the tools they need to succeed in life. And that is a valuable gift indeed.

The premise of our approach is that the poor have potential, they have skills, energy and some knowledge about changing their situation but face several interconnected barriers that inhibit their ability to take advantage of possibilities and opportunities to improve their situations

In Exodus 4:2, God encouraged Moses to use what he had in his hands. Urban Impact Kenya is following this example, by Envisioning, Mobilizing and providing training to local churches to identify and encourage the poorest, most vulnerable families (Populations) to recognize what they already have, rather than what they do not have. Our focus is to help transform “I can’t”, “I am Poor”, “I don’t have anything”, “I have nothing“ mentality to one of “I can do something“ and “I can try it out”. Over time, hearts, mind-sets and whole communities are changed forever. Replicable change.

Our Approach

We are committed to staying and working in the urban informal settlements for as long as necessary, working with local Church partners, likeminded community-based organizations and directly where necessary, to respond to immediate needs and find sustainable solutions.

Our understanding of poverty describes the change we believe God wants to see in our communities and explains how Urban Impact Kenya, the local church — as well as the wider community — are a part of this transformation.

As such, we use a proven model to transform lives and communities. It is an approach to community development that takes into account spiritual, social, and economic well-being. Working alongside churches in some of the most marginalized communities in the Slums of Nairobi, we share hope and help through Livelihoods Support, Education and Scholarship, Youth Empowerment and development through self-reliance groups, savings and loans, spiritual formation, and small businesses development. Our approach starts with Churches, and extends to families and communities. We call this transformational empowerment. Our approach is intended to be…
